Developing climate action competencies.

The people on the Island of Ireland have an unparalleled capacity for storytelling. Our creatives have the potential to explore new ways to engage with the public around the topics of climate change, environmental degradation and biodiversity loss. The overarching theme is Our Waterway Network. The initiative supports creatives to engage with these subjects in an informed way and develop skills in creating effective immersive experiences, so their future works leave a lasting impression with audiences.

Our waterway network.

Ireland has more than 1000 km of lakes, rivers and canals that form an interconnected network of waterways that traverse our Island. Most of our major urban centres feature waterways as a central focal point and their value for recreation and inspiration is immeasurable. However, many of our waterways are under pressure from erratic weather patterns, invasive species overtaking ecosystems and pollution from industrialised farming.

Support actions.

Immersion: Experience Climate Action is a two year programme developed by Déanta Studio that will see 10 successful candidates engaged in a series of activities over 2024 and 2025 including workshops with experts from climate action, biodiversity and immersive technology as well as engagement with community groups and necessary supports to develop their concepts further. Other aspects include a retreat, lectures, networking events, groups discussions and 1:1 sessions.

Why the creative industry?

As individual members of society we are subdued to information about climate change in our day to day lives, often we build a tolerance to the information that is being told to us. The variety of mediums and disciplines within the creative industries offers new lenses to communicate this information. Often when we engage in arts during leisure time our tolerance-guard is down and we are more receptive to narratives. This offers a unique opportunity to deliver impactful stories and influence audiences’ climate action.
